Target Information
Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are essential cofactors for several mitochondrial enzymes and other subcellular compartment proteins. They contain sulfur and iron, and are synthesized through multiple steps involving cysteine desulfurases, iron donors, chaperones, and scaffold proteins.
The ISCU gene encodes two isoforms, ISCU1 and ISCU2, which function as Fe-S cluster scaffold proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with myopathy characterized by severe exercise intolerance and myoglobinuria.
