Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making recognition by sequence homology difficult. The MRPS2 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S2 family. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed.
