Target Information
MEF2C is a transcription activator that binds specifically to the MEF2 element present in regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It controls cardiac morphogenesis and myogenesis, and is involved in vascular development.
MEF2C plays an essential role in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory by regulating excitatory synapse numbers and synaptic transmission. It is crucial for neuronal development, cortical electrical activity, and proper development of megakaryocytes, platelets, and bone marrow B lymphopoiesis.
It is required for B-cell survival and proliferation in response to BCR stimulation, efficient IgG1 antibody responses to T-cell-dependent antigens, and normal induction of germinal center B cells. MEF2C may also participate in neurogenesis and cortical architecture development. Isoforms 3 and 4, lacking the repressor domain, are more active than isoforms 1 and 2.
