Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, preventing easy recognition by homology.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein of the ribosomal protein S18P family. It is one of three proteins with significant similarity to bacterial S18 proteins. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
