The antibody was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum using an epitope-specific immunogen. Purity is greater than 95% as determined by SDS-PAGE.

Target Information

The antimicrobial protein BPI (Bactericidal Permeability Increasing protein) is a 55 kDa protein found in the primary (azurophilic) granules of human neutrophils and also on the surface of neutrophils, small intestinal, and oral epithelial cells. BPI exhibits high affinity for the lipid A region of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in gram-negative bacterial membranes, leading to multiple anti-infective activities such as:

• Cytotoxicity via membrane disruption
• Neutralization of gram-negative bacterial LPS
• Opsonization to enhance phagocytosis by neutrophils

BPI expression in airway epithelial cells suggests a role in LPS-triggered airway disease and inflammation. Recombinant fragment rBPI21 (21 kDa) has been shown to provide protection against invasive pneumococcal disease by binding pneumolysin, a gram-positive bacterial toxin.
