CHMP6는 chromatin-modifying protein/charged multivesicular body protein (CHMP) 패밀리에 속하며, ESCRT-III 복합체의 구성요소로 작용합니다.
이 복합체는 표면 수용체 단백질의 분해 및 endocytic multivesicular bodies (MVBs) 형성에 관여합니다.
일부 CHMP 단백질은 핵과 세포질/소포체 분포를 모두 가지며, 예를 들어 CHMP1A는 MVB 형성과 세포 주기 조절 모두에 필요합니다 (Tsang et al., 2006).
