Background
Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 1 (OR8D1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses leading to smell perception. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure shared with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Olfactory receptors are responsible for the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals, forming the largest gene family in the human genome. The nomenclature of olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
