Background
This gene encodes a soluble cytokine that belongs to the type II interferon family. The encoded IFN-γ protein is secreted by both innate and adaptive immune cells. It forms a homodimer that binds to the interferon gamma receptor, initiating immune responses against viral and microbial infections.
