Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific (RefSeq, Mar 2014).
