Background
Olfactory receptors are responsible for recognizing odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) originating from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are essential for odorant signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is species-independent.
