Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognizing and mediating odorant signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
