Background

This gene encodes an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase involved in regulating membrane trafficking. The protein localizes to multiple subcellular compartments, including the trans-Golgi network, clathrin-coated vesicles, endosomes, and plasma membrane. It may play a role in primary cilium formation. Mutations in this gene cause oculocerebrorenal syndrome of Lowe and Dent disease. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
