Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition — opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary greatly among species, which complicates recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a putative 39S subunit protein belonging to the L47P ribosomal protein family. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 2p, 2q, 5p, and 10q.
