Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes also lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and deletions in this gene may contribute to velo-cardio-facial syndrome and DiGeorge syndrome. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
