Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a protein-to-rRNA ratio of approximately 75:25, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins composing the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology-based identification difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and sequence analysis has identified alternatively spliced variants encoding different isoforms (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
