Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of small 28S and large 39S subunits, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. The latter contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The MRPL24 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, more than twice the size of its E. coli counterpart (EcoL24). Sequence analysis identified two transcript variants encoding the same protein. [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
