Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Additionally, prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins composing mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology-based identification difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene is found on chromosome 21q. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. (RefSeq, Jan 2016)
