Background
This gene encodes a nuclear protein involved in homologous recombination, telomere length maintenance, and DNA double-strand break repair. The protein exhibits 3′ to 5′ exonuclease and endonuclease activity, and forms a complex with the RAD50 homolog. This complex is essential for nonhomologous DNA end joining and enhances single-stranded DNA endonuclease and exonuclease activities. Together with a DNA ligase, it facilitates joining of noncomplementary DNA ends using short homologies near fragment termini. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 3, and alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding different isoforms (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
