Background
Glutamate metabotropic receptor 5 (GRM5) is a member of the G-protein coupled receptor 3 family. The encoded protein functions as a metabotropic glutamate receptor, activating the phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. It is involved in neural network regulation and synaptic plasticity. Glutamatergic neurotransmission plays a key role in normal brain function and is implicated in various neuropathologic conditions. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 11, and alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
