Background

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the dual specificity protein kinase family and functions as a mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase kinase. MAP kinases, also known as extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), integrate multiple biochemical signals. This kinase lies upstream of MAP kinases and activates them upon various extra- and intracellular stimuli. As a key component of the MAP kinase signal transduction pathway, it is involved in cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation, and development.
