Background
Potassium calcium-activated channel subfamily M alpha 1 (KCNMA1) is the gene encoding the MaxiK channel, a large conductance, voltage- and calcium-sensitive potassium channel. These channels play a key role in regulating smooth muscle tone and neuronal excitability. MaxiK channels are composed of two subunits: a pore-forming alpha subunit (product of KCNMA1) and a modulatory beta subunit. Intracellular calcium influences the association between these subunits. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
