Background
Muscarinic cholinergic receptors are part of the G protein-coupled receptor family. Their functional diversity arises from acetylcholine binding, leading to cellular responses such as adenylate cyclase inhibition, phosphoinositide degradation, and potassium channel mediation. These receptors modulate many acetylcholine effects in both central and peripheral nervous systems. Although the clinical implications of this receptor are not fully known, mouse studies suggest its role in adenylyl cyclase inhibition. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
