Background
Laminins are a family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins and the major non-collagenous components of basement membranes. They are involved in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminins are composed of three non-identical chains—alpha, beta, and gamma (formerly A, B1, and B2)—that form a cruciform structure. Each chain is encoded by a distinct gene, and multiple isoforms exist. Different combinations of alpha, beta, and gamma chains form heterotrimeric laminin isoforms, designated numerically in the order of discovery (e.g., α1β1γ1 = Laminin 1).
