Background
The IRF4 gene encodes a transcription factor belonging to the interferon regulatory factor (IRF) family. These proteins contain a distinctive tryptophan pentad repeat DNA-binding domain and play key roles in regulating interferons and interferon-inducible genes in response to viral infection. IRF4 is lymphocyte-specific and acts as a negative regulator of Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling, which is vital for the activation of innate and adaptive immune systems. Chromosomal translocation t(6;14)(p25;q32) involving this gene and the IgH locus may contribute to multiple myeloma. Alternative splicing variants have also been identified.
