Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the CXC chemokine family and acts as one of the major mediators of the inflammatory response. It is secreted by several cell types and functions as a chemoattractant as well as a potent angiogenic factor. This gene is implicated in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis, a respiratory tract disease caused by viral infection. It forms part of a chemokine gene cluster located on chromosome 4q (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
