Target Information
The ENT1 gene is a member of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein that localizes to plasma and mitochondrial membranes and mediates cellular uptake of nucleosides from the surrounding medium. This equilibrative transporter is sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine. Nucleoside transporters are essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo nucleoside synthesis pathways and for uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and antiviral chemotherapies. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
