Target Information
Caveolae are specialized plasma membrane domains involved in the sequestration of lipid and protein molecules. These organelles play important roles in lipid metabolism, growth regulation, signal transduction, and apoptosis. Caveolin interacts with and regulates heterotrimeric G-proteins.
The caveolin gene family encodes 21–24 kDa integral membrane proteins forming the main structural components of caveolae. Caveolin-2 is abundantly expressed in fibroblasts, differentiated adipocytes, smooth and skeletal muscle, and endothelial cells. The expression pattern of caveolin-1 resembles that of caveolin-2, while caveolin-3 expression is mainly restricted to muscle tissues.
