Target Information

BST2 (also known as CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth. Its expression on fibroblast cell lines supports stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines. BST2 is highly expressed in B-cell lineages, T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, dendritic cells, and myeloma cells.

Studies indicate that BST2 acts as an inhibitor of retrovirus release from human cells, with its activity counteracted by the HIV-1 accessory protein Vpu. BST2-mediated retention of virions on cell surfaces or endocytosis into BST2-positive compartments is abolished when BST2 is depleted, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target in HIV/AIDS. Dysregulation of BST2 has also been associated with stomatitis.
