Target Information

Slc1a6 encodes a protein that functions as a glutamate transporter, also known as excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT). It is a sodium- and potassium-dependent member of the solute carrier family 6 (SLC1), widely distributed throughout the brain.
There are five EAAT subtypes, each with specific distribution. SLC1A6 mediates the uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate, functioning as a symporter transporting one amino acid molecule together with two or three Na⁺ ions and one proton, coupled with the counter-transport of one K⁺ ion.
It also mediates Cl⁻ flux to prevent accumulation of negative charges. SLC1A6 plays a redundant role in rapid removal of released glutamate from the synaptic cleft, essential for terminating postsynaptic glutamate action.
