Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCP) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein (MACP) family. UCPs uncouple oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They transfer anions across the mitochondrial membrane and facilitate proton return, reducing mitochondrial membrane potential. UCPs show tissue-specific expression, most abundant in brain and testis. The SLC25A14 gene product includes an N-terminal hydrophobic domain unique among UCPs, with two known splice variants.
