Target Information
The CARS gene encodes a class 1 aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase. This enzyme catalyzes the aminoacylation of specific tRNAs with cysteine.
It is located near the imprinted gene domain of chromosome 11p15.5, a region associated with tumor-suppressor activity. Alterations in this region are linked to Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, and various cancers including lung, ovarian, and breast cancer.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
