Target Information

PNPT1 (polyribonucleotide nucleotidyltransferase 1, mitochondrial) is an RNA-binding protein involved in numerous RNA metabolic processes. It catalyzes the phosphorolysis of single-stranded polyribonucleotides in the 3′-to-5′ direction and is a component of the mitochondrial degradosome (mtEXO) complex. This complex degrades 3′ overhang double-stranded RNA in an ATP-dependent manner. PNPT1 is essential for proper processing and polyadenylation of mitochondrial mRNAs and plays a role in mitochondrial morphogenesis, respiration, and regulation of the electron transport chain. It also contributes to the stability of specific mature miRNAs in melanoma cells and RNA surveillance. Mutations in PNPT1 can cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 13 (COXPD13) and autosomal recessive deafness 70 (DFNB70).
