BOLL 유전자는 생식세포 발달에 필요한 DAZ 유전자 패밀리에 속하며, RNA 결합 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 유전자는 Drosophila Boule과 유사하며, 인간의 DAZ 또는 DAZL보다 더 높은 상동성을 가집니다. 해당 유전자의 기능 상실은 정자 결핍증(azoospermia)을 유발하며, 주된 결함은 감수분열 G2/M 전이에 존재합니다. 두 가지 상이한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
