Target Information
The Seipin (BSCL2) gene encodes a protein located in the endoplasmic reticulum that plays a key role in lipid droplet morphology. Mutations in this gene are associated with congenital generalized lipodystrophy type 2 (Berardinelli-Seip syndrome), a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by near absence of adipose tissue and severe insulin resistance. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
