Target Information
hCG beta is the beta chain of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a 40 kDa glycoprotein hormone produced by trophoblastic cells of the placenta beginning 10 to 12 days after conception.
hCG consists of alpha and beta subunits that are non-covalently associated. The alpha subunit is similar to those found in pituitary hormones (FSH, LH, TSH), while the beta subunit confers biological specificity.
During the first trimester of pregnancy, hCG maintains the corpus luteum, stimulating progesterone production and supporting the secretory endometrium.
In non-pregnant individuals, hCG is present only in trace amounts but rises sharply during pregnancy.
Diseases associated with hCG dysfunction include gestational trophoblastic tumor and hydatidiform mole.
