Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is further converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): intracellular, homodimeric enzyme (~32 kDa)
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): mitochondrial, tetrameric enzyme (~80 kDa)
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): extracellular, multimeric enzyme
- SOD4 (CCS): copper chaperone for SOD1 activation
SOD2 is located in the mitochondrial matrix and plays a crucial role in detoxifying superoxide generated by the respiratory chain.
