Target Information
Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), also known as Human herpes virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and -2), are members of the Herpesviridae family and are ubiquitously contagious to humans.
HSV-1 strains typically cause cold sores, while HSV-2 strains cause most genital herpes infections. Transmission occurs when an infected individual is shedding the virus.
The herpes virion contains a large double-stranded, linear DNA genome within a capsid and surrounded by a viral envelope. HSV strains carry over 70 open reading frames (ORFs).
HSV infection has also been associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
