This antibody is specific for the 1–24 amino acid sequence in ACTH and shows no cross-reactivity with ACTH 17–39. The antibody exhibits an affinity constant greater than 10¹¹/mol.

Target Information

This gene encodes a polypeptide hormone precursor that undergoes extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing by prohormone convertases. There are eight potential cleavage sites within the precursor, and depending on tissue type and available convertases, processing may yield up to ten biologically active peptides with diverse cellular functions.

The encoded protein is primarily synthesized in corticotroph cells of the anterior pituitary, producing adrenocorticotrophin (essential for normal steroidogenesis and adrenal maintenance) and β-lipotropin as major end products. In other tissues such as the hypothalamus, placenta, and epithelium, additional cleavage sites may be used, generating peptides that regulate pain, energy homeostasis, melanocyte stimulation, and immune modulation. These include various melanotropins, lipotropins, and endorphins derived from ACTH and β-lipotropin.

Mutations in this gene have been linked to early-onset obesity, adrenal insufficiency, and red hair pigmentation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described.
