Target Information
Somatostatin is a multifunctional protein affecting exocrine and endocrine secretion, neurotransmission, neuronal modulation, and cell proliferation. These functions are mediated through the GPCR family of somatostatin receptors. Six receptor subtypes have been identified; SSTR5, a 364 amino acid receptor, is predominantly expressed in the pituitary and hypothalamus. It contains seven transmembrane regions, forms homodimers and heterodimers (e.g., with SSTR1), and is implicated in ACTH secretion regulation. Polymorphisms in the SSTR5 gene have been observed in patients with acromegaly.
