Product Specific Information
This recombinant protein is suitable for use as a control.
It is soluble in water and most aqueous buffers above and below the isoelectric point.
Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function.
It has a molecular mass of approximately 16 kDa and is encoded by the ob (obese) gene. Leptin is primarily produced by adipocytes, reflecting the relationship between fat mass and body weight regulation.
Smaller quantities are secreted by stomach epithelial cells and the placenta. Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions involved in appetite and energy balance, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells.
Leptin influences:
- Food intake and energy expenditure
- Adiposity through hypothalamic receptors
- Hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, and immune response
- Pubertal development and fetal growth
Research has linked leptin to obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension.
Defects in leptin production can result in severe hereditary obesity.
Leptin also has thermogenic effects and regulates enzymes involved in fatty acid oxidation.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
