Target Information
This gene encodes a homeobox-containing transcription factor homologous to the empty spiracles gene in Drosophila.
It is expressed in three main human tissues: dorsal telencephalon, olfactory neuroepithelium, and urogenital system.
During development, EMX2 expression shows a gradient patterning the neocortex into functional regions.
In olfactory neuroepithelia, it forms complexes with eIF4E, potentially regulating mRNA transport or translation.
In the developing urogenital system, expression occurs in epithelial tissues and is negatively regulated by HOXA10.
Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding distinct proteins.
