The 8E2 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD46 (membrane cofactor protein).
CD46 is a transmembrane glycoprotein consisting of four isoforms, showing electrophoretic bands at 51–58 kDa (lower band) and 59–68 kDa (upper band).
It is expressed on most nucleated cells and regulates complement activation by binding C3b and C4b, protecting host cells from complement attack.

CD46 also serves as a receptor for several pathogens, including measles virus, human herpes virus type 6, group A streptococci, and Neisseria species.
Cross-linking of TCR and CD46 on naive CD4+ T cells induces strong proliferation and activation of regulatory T cells that express granzyme A and can kill activated immune cells and dendritic cells.

Applications Tested: Pre-titrated for flow cytometry using normal human peripheral blood cells. Recommended use: 5 µL (0.5 µg) per test (final volume 100 µL, 10⁵–10⁸ cells/test).

CD46 (MCP, membrane cofactor protein) is a multifunctional transmembrane protein that binds and inactivates C3b and C4b complement fragments.
It regulates T cell-mediated inflammatory responses by either inhibiting (CD46-1 isoform) or enhancing (CD46-2 isoform) contact hypersensitivity reactions.
CD46 also acts as a receptor for several human pathogens and modulates T cell polarization and immune responses.
It plays a protective role in placental tissue and is expressed on the inner acrosomal membrane of spermatozoa.
