Target Information
CpG methylation is an epigenetic modification important for embryonic development, imprinting, and X-chromosome inactivation. Studies in mice have shown that DNA methylation is essential for mammalian development. The Dnmt2 gene encodes a protein similar to DNA methyltransferases but lacking methyltransferase activity. It binds strongly to DNA, suggesting a role in marking specific genomic sequences. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
