Alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) is a homodimeric enzyme (~86 kDa) containing two zinc atoms per monomer, essential for catalytic function. ALP plays a key role in liver metabolism and skeletal development. In bacteria, it serves as a source of inorganic phosphate, and in yeast, it is useful for studying membrane protein sorting.
