Antibody detects endogenous levels of total SMC5.
Target Information
SMC5 is a core component of the SMC5–SMC6 complex, which is involved in DNA double-strand break repair via homologous recombination.
This complex:
- Promotes sister chromatid homologous recombination by recruiting the SMC1–SMC3 cohesin complex.
- Is required for telomere maintenance through recombination in ALT (alternative lengthening of telomeres) cell lines.
- Mediates sumoylation of shelterin complex components, leading to disassembly in ALT-associated PML bodies (APBs).
- Facilitates recruitment of telomeres to PML nuclear bodies.
- Ensures sister chromatid cohesion during prometaphase and mitotic progression, independently of SMC6.
- May prevent transcription of episomal DNA, such as circular viral genomes.
