Target Information
Selenium is an essential trace element that helps protect against toxicity from heavy metals and reactive xenobiotics. It exhibits strong anticarcinogenic properties, and selenium deficiency may lead to certain neurological diseases. These effects are mediated by selenium-binding proteins. Selenium-binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) is down-regulated in lung adenocarcinoma, colorectal cancer, and ovarian cancer, but is upregulated two-fold in the brains of patients with schizophrenia, making it a potential biomarker for this disease.
