Target Information
Spectrins are filamentous cytoskeletal proteins acting as scaffold proteins that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. They are composed of alpha and beta dimers forming tetramers in a head-to-head arrangement.
The gene encodes an alpha spectrin expressed in nonerythrocytic cells, implicated in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations can cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
