Target Information
The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows potassium ions to flow preferentially into the cell.
KIR4.1 (Kir1.2) is highly expressed in the brain, including glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons. It is also found in myelin-producing oligodendrocytes and is essential for myelination during nervous system development.
The human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
KIR4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development and maps to chromosome 21, possibly associated with Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
