Target Information

Kcne1 is a member of the voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels, representing one of the most complex classes of voltage-gated ion channels. Kv channels regulate neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
The Kcne1 gene encodes a membrane protein similar to the KCNE1 gene product, a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, isk-related subfamily. Kcne1, an intronless gene, is deleted in AMME contiguous gene syndrome and may contribute to cardiac and neurologic abnormalities in the syndrome. Functionally, Kcne1 acts as a potassium channel ancillary subunit essential for generating native K(+) currents through heteromeric ion channel complexes with Kv channel alpha subunits. It also serves as an inhibitory beta-subunit of the repolarizing cardiac potassium ion channel KCNQ1.
Diseases associated with KCNE1 include Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome 2 and Long QT Syndrome 5.
