Target Information
Tryptase gamma, also known as serine protease 31 or transmembrane tryptase, is an enzyme encoded by the TPSG1 gene in humans.
Tryptases belong to the trypsin-like serine protease family (peptidase family S1) and are enzymatically active only as heparin-stabilized tetramers, resistant to endogenous proteinase inhibitors.
Several tryptase genes are located on chromosome 16p13.3. Four functional genes have been identified: alpha I, beta I, beta II, and gamma I, each with allelic variants (e.g., alpha II, beta III, gamma II).
Beta tryptases are mainly expressed in mast cells, while alpha-tryptases are predominant in basophils.
This gene differs from other tryptase family members by having a C-terminal hydrophobic domain that may serve as a membrane anchor.
Tryptases are implicated as mediators in asthma and other allergic and inflammatory disorders.
